Fairytale Oil

This recipe is also my contribution to the Mountain Rose Herbs recipe contest.

When using herbs and flowers in homemade skin care, a simple way of getting a good mix of herbs is to use premade herb tea blends.
Mountain Rose Herbs Fairytale tea is a really good blend to use in both skin and hair care products. It’s contains a dozen different herbs and flowers, that not only make good tea, but they also all have great benefits for your skin and hair!  Some of the main ingredients include calendula, red clover, lavender and chamomile.

A good way to get out all the good stuff of herbs is, as I wrote about last week as well, to make a herbal oil. Here’s the recipe for the Fairytale all-round oil:

  • Add 1 dl of  fairytale tea to a glass jar.
  • Fill the jar up with 5 dl of vegetable oil – my favorites are jojoba or olive oil, and put a lid on
  • Leave in a sunny window for at least 2 weeks
  • Strain away the herbs
  • (If you like, you can add a bit of Vitamin E to prolong the shelf life, and/or some essential oil, like lavender or rosemary.)

Now you will have a fantastic all-round oil, that can be used for any skin or hair type.
Here are some tips on how to use it:

  • Hair oiling: Massage oil into lengths and scalp, leave on for at least 30 minutes. Shampoo your hair before wetting it, that way the oil will be more easily washed off. The fairytale oil will give you shiny, soft and strong hair.
  • Leave-in conditioner: Rub a few drops of the fairytale oil between the palms of your hands, apply to the lengths of your hair. You really only need a few drops.
  • Face oil: Apply to your face morning and evenings. This oil will soften, tighten and cleanse your skin, leaving you with a glowing look.
  • Body oil: You can also use this oil all over your body. Apply before or after showering. Personally I prefer to apply the oil before jumping into the shower, because the oil will be better absorbed when the pores are opened by the heat. Plus the oil protects your skin from the hard water.
  • Dry skin oil: This oil is also very good for your extra dry areas, such as feet, hands and nails, lips, elbows and knees. Apply some whereever you feel dry.
  • Perfume: The oil will also smell really nice, so just apply a bit behind your ears and you will smell like a fairytale!
