Triple Lemon Hot Oil Treatment For Dry Hands

February 17, 2011

This time of year is the time when I have most trouble with dry hands. I’m brave enough to leave the gloves at home, but unfortunately the cold wind still affects them and dries the hands out. To cope with this  I tend to make a hot oil treatment for my hands. This is a very effective way of moisturizing the hands but yet very simple to make. My recipe combines moisturizing oils with the benefits of citrus fruits, which softens hard skin while also making your nails bright and shiny.  To get the most out of this luxurious treatment you can turn it into a scrub and also make a cuticle oil out of it.

Triple lemon oil treatment for dry hands

  • 1 dl olive oil
  • 1 dl sesame seed oil
  • 1-2 lemons
  • essential citrus oil; orange, lemon, lime, grapefruit, clementine… Or even lemongrass

Grate off the zest of the lemon. In a double boiler, combine the oils and add the zest. Heat the oil up, but avoid boiling it. Allow the lemon zest to infuse into the simmering oil for at least 15 minutes. Then turn the heat down and squeeze in the lemon juice. Allow to cool for a few minutes. Carefully check how hot the mixture is. You’ll want it to still be warm but you don’t want to burn yourself.

Strain out the zest and pour the mixture into a bowl that can fit both your hands. Then add about 5-10 drops of essential oil, one or a mixture of different.

Sink your hands into the oil, stirring a little bit so that the lemon juice mixes with the oils. Leave your hands in the oil for 10-30 minutes. Rub your hands together and massage the oil carefully into hands and nails. You can save this oil and do the treatment over, but if you reheat it, do it very carefully (and max to 40 C) other wise the benefits of the essential oils will be lost.

Triple Lemon Oil Scrub
To turn this treatment into a scrub, you need a scrubbing agent. This can be sugar, salt, baking soda, starch, coffee, flour… I like a mixture of 1 part sugar and 1 part cornstarch, which in my opinion is mild enough, but yet effective, for the hands. Simply rub the scrubbing agent over your hands. And don’t forget scrubbing the nails! The scrub will polish your nails and make them bright and pretty. Then rub the scrub off and continue oiling.

Triple Lemon Cuticle Oil
One of my main problems this time of year is in fact my cuticles, that always dry up something terrible. You can turn the leftovers of this oil treatment into a cuticle oil. The best way to do this is to pour a bit of the oil into an empty and well cleaned nail polish bottle. Just shake well before using, brush the oil over your cuticles and massage them.
