Coconutty coconut

April 22, 2010

Today I bought Ecological, coldpressed coconut oila jar of cold-pressed, ecological coconut oil from Ekolo in Hakaniemi. If you live in Helsinki you should go by there and get some, it’s on special at the moment (still 5.50€/200 ml though). It’s a whole different feeling to have coconut oil that actually smells and tastes like actual coconut!

If you go to Ekolo, be sure to pick up some Balance tea by Oasis as well, seriously the best herb tea in the world!

Coconut fat is great for skin care – it can be used as such as a protecting and moisturizing salve for face and body, and is also a great hair oil. Just rub a few drops between the palm of your hands (use so little that you hardly can see that your palms are shinier) and stroke lightly over the lengths of your hair.

Coconut oil is also a wonderful addition to food, it has all the right kinds of fats, contains antioxidants, and even increases the absorption of other nutrients! Coconut oil is great for cooking, because it can stand high temperatures well without starting to produce transfats, so it’s actually one of the few oils that are safe to fry in.

Here’s a video that explains the benefits of coconut oil in food:

Coconut oil is wonderfull for my hair! It’s actually one of the two oils (the other one is jojoba) that is proven to actually penetrate the hair shaft.
But when it comes to my face it’s too clogging, I get acne within a few days of use. So it’s worth being carefull/spot testing before applying it in huge amounts to your face if you are prone to acne or clogged pores. 🙂

I actually quite like coconut oil on my skin. Haven’t used it all that much though, honestly, so I don’t know what long-term effects if would have on my skin. Should try it out a bit more, I guess.
But yeah, one should always be careful when trying out new stuff 🙂
What kind of coconut oil do you use? There’s such a variety of coconut oils/fats, everything from the silver packages you can by in the shops to these kinds of fractioned, ecological, cold pressed ones…

I’ve tried both the refined kind (Cocos silver package) and a cold pressed ecological one (CocoVi), both had the same resault. Coconut oil is commonly known to be clogging, it’s mostly a saturated fat.
On the other hand coconut oil also contains lauric acid, which is proven to have antimicrobial properties and is therefore used in most products agains acne. So I think it’s really a love or hate relationship, if your pores clog up easily coconut oil is going to cause problems (despite the lauric acid), but if your pores don’t clog up that easily the lauric acid will be wonderfull for your skin health. Unfortunetly I belong to the first group.
